While I’m only semi-familiar with the likes of country music’s legends, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, and Waylon Jennings, I will say, I have respect for the existence of the genre and those historic artists, but I can’t say the same for the more contemporary abominations like Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton or Luke Ryan. I just don’t get their commercial appeal. They downright make me cringe, but the aforementioned artists were less polished, less cookie-cutter and unique. Bug Martin belongs to this aforementioned group in the way of authenticity and rawness. Bug croons with heartfelt realness and his songs are wonderous to listen to. His picking, slide guitar and haunting vocals are reminiscent of Gram Parsons and his obvious love for storytelling. No revenge themes, songs about trucks or country roads, just good old fashioned, bluesy melodies about heartbreak, contrasted with feel-good, solemn hooks and a dash of psychedelia.
